EverStep Solid — stair finish for architects in renovation and transformation

In renovation and transformation projects, the existing staircase is often a design constraint. Extra build-up height, fire safety, wear resistance and planning all need to be solved at once, while the existing staircase structure must be preserved. Architects therefore look for a system that combines these requirements without changing the stair geometry.

You know the moment: the client wants natural stone or terrazzo on the staircase, and you already know before running the numbers that the existing structure won't allow twenty millimetres of board thickness. Terrazzo weighs too much. A vinyl imitation looks exactly like an imitation next to a resin floor or mineral wall finish. EverStep Solid was developed for precisely this constraint: an overlay tread system in recycled natural stone composite with a system thickness of 4.3 mm and an integrated stair nosing. Due to the minimal build-up height, the impact on stair geometry and riser proportions stays limited; the connection at the first and last step and adjoining floor levels is checked per project. The material has an authentic mineral appearance and texture — not a print repeating its pattern. Geometry preserved, even where nothing else fits

In transformation projects, build-up height is often the first thing that rules out systems you'd otherwise consider — an energy renovation already raises the floor build-up, and older staircases are frequently too steep or too tight for anything thicker than a few millimetres. The system build-up of 4.3 mm (approximately 4.7 mm including elastic adhesive) keeps the impact on riser proportions, door heights and walking lines limited — including in exactly those situations; the connection at the first and last step and adjoining floor levels is checked per project. The stair nosing is integrated into the tread: no separate aluminium profiles, no details that may create a trip hazard, no dirt accumulation along edges. Performance with standard references

In a stairwell, you're judged on fire safety, slip resistance, wear resistance and emissions — not on how mineral something looks. For the tested product build-up, EverStep Solid has a fire classification Bfl-s1 in accordance with EN 13501-1; this is relevant for application in stairwells and escape routes, where suitability for the specific building is assessed against the applicable project and fire safety requirements. For the relevant product build-up, measurement results are available for slip resistance in accordance with NEN 7909 and classifications in accordance with DIN 51130; exact values and tested conditions are set out in the technical handbook and accompanying test reports. Wear resistance: 10,000 Taber Abraser cycles in accordance with ASTM D4060-84. Bond strength: >4.0 N/mm² in accordance with EN 1542. Emission performance at Indoor Air Comfort Gold level, tested by Eurofins.

Three renovation systems and one anti-slip upgrade

Not every project calls for the same intervention, and it's up to you to decide, per situation, where the line sits between refinishing the staircase entirely and simply solving the anti-slip issue. EverStep is the overlay tread for residential renovation through dealers. EverStep Solid is the heavy-duty version with SolidLux UV coating for intensive use in apartment buildings, commercial and public buildings — immediately loadable after UV curing, with no drying times, so stairwells can be renovated tread by tread or floor by floor without closure. EverStep Solid compared with other stair finishes

When choosing for a project, you inevitably weigh EverStep Solid against tile, PVC, HPL, epoxy or solid natural stone. On the points that matter in renovation:

Build-up height — tile/solid natural stone is usually relatively high, PVC/HPL systems are system-dependent, EverStep Solid has a system build-up of 4.3 mm.

Material appearance — tile/natural stone is mineral, PVC/HPL mostly has a decorative top layer or print, EverStep Solid is natural stone composite.

Slip resistance — for tile/natural stone it depends on the surface chosen, for PVC/HPL it depends on system and finish, for EverStep Solid a tested product build-up is available.

Colour as a design parameter

Fifteen standard colours are a fine starting point for a home, but on project work you want to steer toward a colour that belongs to the building, not to a collection. The Stone Naturel, Stone Blend and Terrazzo collections comprise fifteen standard colours, but for project work colour is fully controllable. In the digital Omnistair Studio colour mixer (link: EN colour mixer path, verify) you compose your own flake mix, produced as a physical sample. Design pigments are matched through the Sikkens 5051 colour system, and at the Experience Center in Waddinxveen over 110 pigments are available to tune mineral structure and stone composition to the architectural identity of the project — from housing association character to hospitality concept.

Circular, with substantiation

Increasingly, a material choice has to be not only attractive but responsible — and demonstrably so. The material is recycled stone composite with a circular material build-up; the system was selected for Beyond Circular. The solvent-free system build-up and low VOC emissions are relevant for BREEAM, LEED and ESG trajectories. Because the existing staircase structure is preserved, full demolition and replacement of the staircase is avoided — which can reduce material use and construction waste compared with full replacement. Product and emission documentation can be supplied for assessment within sustainability and ESG trajectories.

  1. How much build-up height does EverStep Solid have? 4.3 mm system build-up, approximately 4.7 mm including the mounting kit. This keeps the geometric impact limited; the first and last riser and adjoining floor levels are checked per project.
  2. Is EverStep Solid suitable for escape routes? For the relevant tested product build-up, EverStep Solid has a fire classification Bfl-s1 in accordance with EN 13501-1. Whether the system can be applied in a specific escape route is assessed against the building and the applicable project and fire safety requirements.
  3. Can EverStep Solid be applied to concrete? Yes, to concrete and to the most common existing staircase constructions. Exact substrate requirements (flatness, residual moisture, preparation) are set out in the technical handbook.
  4. Is EverStep Solid suitable for housing associations? Yes, the system is regularly applied in housing association projects, partly because of the combination of fire class, anti-slip performance and limited time to use after installation.
  5. Can a staircase stay in use during renovation? In many cases, installation can be planned in phases per stair section or floor, so full closure can often be limited or avoided. Due to UV curing, the SolidLux finish has no long drying time like a traditional coating system; the actual time to use depends on the installation method, substrate and adhesive or sealant used, and is set out per project in the installation plan.   6. What fire class does EverStep Solid have? For the tested product build-up: Bfl-s1, in accordance with EN 13501-1.
  7. Is custom colour work possible? Yes. Through the digital colour mixer and the more than 110 pigments at the Experience Center, colour can be fully tuned to the architectural identity of the project.
  8. Are BIM details available? Not yet. BIM families are planned but not currently available. Detail drawings of the main connections are available on request through project advice.
  9. Are STABU specification texts available? Yes, in STABU format for both the overlay tread system and the integrated anti-slip upgrade — currently available on request.
  10. When is a full staircase replacement not necessary? When the existing staircase structure is still structurally sound and only the walking surface, appearance and anti-slip performance need renewing. In that case, EverStep Solid is installed as an overlay tread over the existing step, without replacing the staircase.
  11. Can EverStep Solid be applied to an occupied project? Yes. Because the system is immediately loadable after UV curing, the renovation can be carried out tread by tread or floor by floor, so residents or users can keep using the building during the works.
