Stair renovation maintenance by material type

traprenovatie onderhoud materiaaltype

A good stair renovation deserves good maintenance. Not because it is complicated — but because the right approach significantly extends the life of the finish.

General maintenance principles for all material types

Regardless of the material, a few universal rules apply.

Remove sand and coarse dirt regularly. Sand acts as an abrasive. On a nosing with intensive use, sand can cause visible wear — even on wear-resistant materials.

Remove spilled liquids immediately. Moisture that sits on the tread for a long time can swell laminate, affect the adhesive bond with PVC, and cause stains on any material.

Use mild cleaning agents. Aggressive solvents, strong acids or abrasives damage the top layer of almost every stair material.

Maintenance by material type

Laminate is cleaned dry or slightly damp, without standing liquid. Avoid aggressive agents, as the top layer is sensitive. Check the anti-slip strip periodically for adhesion.

PVC is water-resistant, so careful wet cleaning is possible. Do not use acetone or solvents. Check the anti-slip coating or strip periodically.

Recycled natural stone composite requires regular removal of dust and sand with a vacuum cleaner or broom, and cleaning with a mild cleaning agent on a slightly damp cloth. Avoid aggressive acids or abrasives. The mineral material does not absorb moisture, which makes maintenance simple — a periodic treatment such as lacquer or wax is not needed.

Is the anti-slip also maintenance-sensitive?

That depends on how the anti-slip is realised.

With separate anti-slip strips, check periodically whether the adhesion is intact. Loose strips are a tripping hazard. With coatings, check periodically whether the coating still provides grip; a worn coating must be renewed. With anti-slip integrated into the material, no periodic maintenance is needed — the anti-slip structure is part of the mineral surface and does not wear like a coating.

How do you keep a staircase clean with pets?

Remove hair regularly — a rubber broom or vacuum cleaner with a hair filter works best. Claw wear on recycled natural stone composite is minimal: the hard mineral surface is well able to withstand the scratches of daily use. And with mud or wet paws: remove quickly, do not let it dry on.

What moisture exactly does to a stair finish is covered in what happens when moisture gets into a stair renovation. The broader framework can be found in stair renovation maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

With normal use: remove dust several times a week, wet clean weekly or as needed.

No. The mineral material does not absorb moisture and requires no periodic treatment such as lacquer or wax.

Yes, with all material types. Watch the nozzle — a hard nozzle can leave scratches on more sensitive materials.

No. A mild cleaning agent is sufficient in most cases. For stubborn dirt: let it work in longer, do not scrub harder.

Test the grip on the nosing. A detached or worn strip must be replaced.
